The "I'm Bored at Work" thread

Post by wolfboy » Thu Feb 14, 2008 4:39 pm

Being a techie there are times at work where there is just nothing to do, try as I might to look busy (I have the misfortune of having the boss sitting next to me) sometimes you really struggle. So, I thought a thread was in order as there seems to be a few of us that post from work, a thread to share things to occupy, amuse, baffle and marvel at. Anecdotes, websites (please, no NSFW for obvious reasons and, in my case, you tube.).

I thought I would start out with a couple of links:

http://www.theregister.co.uk
http://community.livejournal.com/techsupport/

A couple of my daily boredom busters (testing can really, really drag some days, like now whilst I am doing performance tests, i.e. sit and watch flashing leds for the next 40 minutes!). Then of course there is always the hilarity that is the "Have Your Say" debates on the beeb, priceless. So, anyone have anything else to add that is SFW and I can add to help combat the mind numbing tedium of my job?

It might not update all that often but Rink Works has some entertaining items that are worth a look.

Having spent much of the last week babysitting out build machine (read as: watch millions of lines of compiler output spin past and poke half-heartedly at it every 10-15 minutes) I'm in serious need of some entertainment.

Yep, they do say great minds think alike...

If you can get away with flash animations try

http://www.weebls-stuff.com
http://www.illwillpress.com for some foamy action (occasional NSFW though)

and the god of flash sites

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal a cool flash portal, some NSFW content but they do rate them so you can tell. A lot of fun especially if your a gamer, I recommend the "decline of video gaming" series
JUST DONT FORGET THE /portal OR YOU'LL GET STUCK IN POPUP LAND

Some great stuff there. Popups are no problem *puts on best commercial VA voice* Because I use new improved http://noscript.net/ , No script gives you what you want when you want it, tired of pop ups? No problem, with no script you can browse pop up free. Remember, http://noscript.net/, the way the net is meant to be.

Oh god I need to get out more *head desk*.

Damn! Nearly got to go home early today.

Our central heating boiler is being replaced, and as the temperature was dropping fast the building manager told us that he might have to close up. Then one of my colleagues worked out how to turn the aircon in our office to hot...

I hope you lynched him en-mass or at the very least gave him a good heckling.

At the risk of injecting some virtue into this thread, I suggest the UC Berkeley online lectures. Since they're real university lectures they've recorded, rather than TV programs, you get all sorts of "are you listening? wake up over there" and "I'd point to Oxygen on that periodic table but i've lost my laser pointer."

They're video but mostly work without looking at them, particularly for things you used to know but have forgotten in recent busy years.
